1.1. Who are we?
Project Inclusion (PI) addresses the issue of the extreme shortage of special educators in government schools. Most students with special needs are not able to reach secondary education, and the retention of such students is an even bigger challenge since most of the time their disabilities remain ‘hidden’.
Sri Aurobindo Society believes that the first step to provide equal and quality education to these young souls is to enable their teachers to identify their special needs. Only then can their presence be acknowledged by the education system, their due rights provided, and empathetic environments created to support their educational journey.
Through PI, regular school teachers were sensitised and trained to identify such students using simple checklists based on behavioural observation. By the end of the training, teachers were able to submit case studies of students with probable Neuro-developmental Disorders (NDD). Those children, along with their parents and siblings, were then invited for a formal screening and counselling by our clinical psychologists. The complete report was shared with the state education departments.
